Kimmy Lauwens was born in Korea and adopted by Belgian parents. She followed her ballet training at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp.
After graduation, she danced at the Royal Ballet of Flanders (Robert Denvers), and the Basler Ballet under the direction of Heinz Spoerli and Youri Vàmos. During her dance career, Kimmy danced repertoire by George Balanchine, Rudolph Nureyev, Nacho Duato, Hans Van Manen, Paul Taylor, Judith Jameson, Heinz Spoerli, Youri Vàmos, William Forsythe and Maurice Béjart.
However, teaching had always been her first and biggest passion so she turned to pedagogy and got a degree at the Higher Institute for Dance and Dance Pedagogy in Antwerp. She started teaching at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp in 1993 and was appointed the school’s artistic director in 2003.
In 2009 Kimmy decided to resign as artistic director and to dedicate herself once again to working directly with young dancers. Since then she has been teaching classical ballet and preparing students for international competitions at the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp.
She is a guest teacher for ‘dance method’ at the bachelor dance department of the ‘Royal Conservatory – Artesis Plantijn Hogeschool Antwerpen’.
Kimmy is frequently invited as a guest teacher in vocational ballet schools and international ballet seminars. She’s a jury member in graduation exams of professional ballet schools and international ballet competitions such as the Prix de Lausanne, Youth American Grand Prix, Tanz Olympic Berlin, All Nippon D.A.T.E. Classic Ballet Competition Miyagi (Japan) and the Concours International de Danse Classique, Toulouse (France).
She collaborates with Mauro di Candia for the pedagogic dance project ‘Formazione Tersicore-Arte&Balletto’ in Italy and is a guest lector at the University of Leuven (KUL),
She has a teachers diploma in ‘Coaching Essentials’ and ‘Progressive Ballet Technique’.
Because of her professional experience and expertise, Kimmy is also an in demand teacher for professional courses for ballet teachers in Belgium and abroad.
